Published

By . Updated: . Covers the launch roster on PS5 and PC.

Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is a four-on-four tag fighter from Arc System Works, the studio behind Dragon Ball FighterZ, and every member of its cast is built around one or two signature tools. Learn the key move first and the rest of a character's kit starts to make sense.

This guide goes team by team through all 20 launch fighters plus the secret character, naming the move that defines each one and how to use it. If you only want to know who is in the game, the Marvel Tokon roster is the faster read.

Fighting Avengers

The Fighting Avengers in Marvel Tokon: Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Panther

Captain America: Trick Shield (R1)

Captain America is the safest place for a new player to start. He has strong strikes, an anti-air uppercut and a projectile, so there is an answer for most situations. Trick Shield travels on an unusual path and can be knocked back toward the opponent as it returns, which leaves them guessing about when and where the hit will land.

Iron Man: Smart Missiles (Down + R2)

Iron Man suits players who like to fight from range. He has beams, missiles, free flight and dash attacks. Repulsor Shot (R1) can be pressed repeatedly for extra shots, while Smart Missiles give him cover to follow behind and close the distance when the moment is right.

Hulk: Gamma Spark (R1)

Hulk hits hard at close range with heavy punches, kicks and charges. Each Gamma Spark raises his Gamma Level, and once he reaches level 3 every move becomes far more threatening. Build the level early so the rest of the round is played on your terms.

Black Panther: Divine Rite (Back + B)

Black Panther is fast and can open up multi-hit combos from almost nothing. What separates her from other rushdown fighters is Divine Rite, which charges her suit with a shield that absorbs the next attack. Use it to take a hit you know is coming and turn that moment into your own opening.

Unbreakable X-Men

The Unbreakable X-Men in Marvel Tokon: Storm, Magik, Wolverine and Danger

Storm: Tempest (R1)

Storm throws lightning and ice, but her real strength is moving the fight itself. Tempest pushes or pulls both characters across the screen. If an opponent keeps backing away to zone you, a well-timed Tempest drags them back into range and hands control to Storm.

Magik: Dark Portal (Any direction + R1)

Magik's huge sword already gives her excellent reach on normal attacks. For opponents sitting just outside that reach, Dark Portal lets her teleport around the stage and reappear right in front of them.

Danger: Calibrate (Any direction + R1)

Danger has quick projectiles and gap closers such as Drill Piercer (Forward + R2), but Calibrate is the core of her game. It places three floating nodes on the stage, and her other moves gain extra effects when they pass through a node. Set the nodes first, then fight around them.

Wolverine: Berserker Claw (R1)

Wolverine moves quickly and has plenty of combo routes. Berserker Claw is his most flexible tool because it branches into several follow-ups. The opponent has to read which one is coming, and a wrong guess usually costs them a lot of health.

Amazing Guardians

The Amazing Guardians in Marvel Tokon: Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel and Peni Parker

Spider-Man: Web Zip (R1)

Spider-Man combines web shots with fast movement to pressure opponents until they open up, and once he gets in he is hard to push out. Web Zip carries him anywhere on screen and can lead into attacks or a throw, so use it to choose the angle you attack from.

Star-Lord: Groove Switch (Any direction + R1)

Star-Lord fights with elemental projectiles: ice can freeze the opponent in place and fire hits several times. Groove Switch swaps between lightning, fire, earth and ice at will, so change elements often to keep the opponent from settling on one answer.

Ms. Marvel: Elasti-Grab (R1)

Ms. Marvel stretches across the screen, so there is no truly safe distance against her. Elasti-Grab pulls her in whichever direction she reaches. If the hand connects with the opponent, she is pulled to them and can go straight into a combo.

Peni Parker: Gadget Launcher (R1)

Peni Parker fights from inside her mech, SP//dr, which carries a supply of bots and drones. Gadget Launcher deploys one of them. The helper you get is random, but each one is strong enough to build pressure, so plan to follow up on whatever comes out.

Knights of Doom

The Knights of Doom in Marvel Tokon: Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin and Carnage

Doctor Doom: Nullify Shield (R1)

Doctor Doom is built for zoning, with beams and projectiles that keep opponents out. Nullify Shield is a slow-moving barrier that deflects incoming attacks and damages anyone it touches. Walk in behind it to close the gap safely when you are ready to attack.

Green Goblin: Glider Summon (Back + R1)

Green Goblin plays best while riding around the stage. Glider Summon brings the glider out, and once he is on it he gains unique attacks such as Flyby Kick (R1) and Glider Dash (any direction + B) that make the most of his extra mobility.

Magneto: Magnetic Blast (R2)

Magneto wants the stage full of metal debris clouds. They change how some of his strongest moves behave and can magnetize opponents, altering how they move. Magnetic Blast is a chargeable projectile that adds a cloud, and it charges faster the more clouds are already out, so each cloud makes the next one easier to place.

Carnage: Parasite Fang (R1)

Carnage is for players who want to attack constantly from close range. Parasite Fang is quick and strong, and it can apply Necrosis, a temporary status that makes his B attacks deal more damage even when the opponent blocks.

Samurai Outriders

The Samurai Outriders in Marvel Tokon: Ghost Rider, Blade, Loki and Deadpool

Ghost Rider: Vengeance Gauge (passive)

Ghost Rider is strongest at midscreen, mixing long chain attacks with command grabs. Watch the Vengeance Gauge: if it overheats, he is left defenseless for a short time. Revelator Chain (R1) and Hell Throttle (Down + R1) can drain the gauge when you need to bring it down.

Blade: Heart Stopper (R1)

Blade has tools for long range, but he does his best work up close. The Heart Stopper projectile applies Marked for Death, which changes how the opponent reacts to his next attacks. Vampire Cleave (Back + R2), for example, deals extra damage to a marked target.

Loki: Misdirection (hold Y during certain attacks)

Loki uses traps and fakeouts to provoke mistakes. Misdirection turns an attack into a counter by leaving a fake Loki behind. When the opponent thinks they have read your next move, Misdirection punishes them for acting on it.

Deadpool: Rope-a-Dope (Y + R2)

Deadpool is full of references to fighting game history, and nearly every attack breaks the fourth wall. Rope-a-Dope nods to Scorpion's spear from Mortal Kombat: it reaches across the screen and pulls the opponent in. Extra attack presses with the right timing turn it into a damaging combo.

The Champion, the secret character

The Champion: Cosmic Crush (Forward + R2)

The Champion is the game's final boss and plays differently from everyone else. Picking him means you play only him, with no team. To make up for it he has far more health than the rest of the cast, and he creates copies of himself to fill the moments where teammates would normally assist.

Cosmic Crush is a lunging overhead swing tied to his unique gauge at the bottom of the screen. Once that gauge is full, landing Cosmic Crush transforms him into his Awakened Form, which strengthens all his attacks and gives him super armor.

Phoenix Cyclops, the first Year 1 DLC fighter, is not covered here because his kit has not been revealed yet.

Which character should you pick first?

  • For a first character: Captain America, whose kit has an answer for most situations.
  • For fighting from range: Iron Man, Doctor Doom or Star-Lord.
  • For constant pressure: Wolverine, Carnage or Spider-Man.
  • For hard-hitting simplicity: Hulk.
  • For setups and tricks: Danger, Magneto, Loki or Peni Parker.
  • For playing without a team: The Champion.
